China-Ireland Research
China Ireland Research Logo

In 2012, UCD, with its partners UCC, NUI Galway, Teagasc, UL, WIT and CIT formed a consortium to build a cohesive infrastructure for the development of strategic links between Irish Research Institutions and Chinese academia and industry. The consortium has built on existing individual strengths and consolidated their interactions around a shared agenda to develop research and innovation collaborations in the three key thematic areas of Agrifood, ICT and Health. The thematic areas are key national research priorities and major elements of Ireland's economy and also areas where the partners have a strong research reputation. This thematic focus was supplemented with a strong regional strategy that identified three regional bases - Beijing, Shanghai, and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong area – in which to focus.

MCCI was set up in April 2010 under the EI and IDA Competence Centres Program and is hosted by the Tyndall National Institute in collaboration with the University of Limerick. MCCI has core funding of €1M per annum from EI and IDA which is supplemented with co-funding from industry and other public sources. MCCI is led by an industry steering board and the research program is driven by its industry members. Companies can use MCCI to create projects and execute world-beating industry-relevant research in line with their business needs.
